DREDD Review

Of all the comic book film adaptations coming out this year if you had to peg just one with your lowest expectations then most would've singled out the new Judge Dredd re-adaptation. It certainly has an uphill battle considering the highly negative reception of the previous film adaptation which starred Sylvester Stallone. Fans of the 2000 AD comics from which the character of Judge Dredd originates were also highly critical about how the previous film didn't even bother trying to maintain what made the comics so well liked. So with all this baggage on its shoulders, could the new film shot on a modest $45 million budget (by Hollywood standards) stand a chance? Well... surprises certainly do happen! And the new Dredd film is a very pleasant surprise!

Judge Dredd is played by Carl Urban, and fans will be pleased to know that, yes, the helmet stays on throughout the entirety of the film. Dredd's face is never seen, and Urban manages to be just as imposing, cold, menacing and bad ass under the helmet as the comics portray the Judge. Judge Dredd is also joined by Judge Anderson, played by the lovely Olivia Thirly, who is a rookie out with Dredd on her first assignment. her performance will determine whether she will pass to become a full fledged judge. Anderson is also a mutant who possesses psychic abilities that allow her to read the minds of those around her and this will make for some interesting confrontations!

The story involves Dredd and Anderson investigating 3 murders in a monolithic and brooding Megastructure named 'Peachtree.' These Megastructures are enormous high rise skyscrapers that can house an entire city of people and are in fact small cities unto themselves. While looking for witnesses they perform a drug bust and manage to apprehend one of the dealers. Unbeknownst to them, their prisoner is someone who knows too much. This arrest leads the top underworld boss of Peachtree to lock down the entire building in an attempt to prevent his interrogation by the authorities. This means either killing him or killing the judges. The film then turns into a large scale version of Die Hard where Dredd and Anderson, trapped in a building with an entire population held hostage, must overcome incredible odds to reach the top and take out their adversaries in order to enforce the law upon the Megastructure. And Dredd is not the negotiating type.

The film is brutally violent with a high body count though the violence is portrayed in an over the top comic book style that manages to spill a lot of blood and break a lot of bones without being too gruesome. The Judge Dredd comics are also known for their dark humour and slapstick social commentary, and all this is well preserved in the film within a serious deadpan style of delivery by both the characters and embedded throughout the Megacity surroundings and textures.

The new Dredd doesn't go as completely sci-fi looking as in the comics with regards to Megacity 01. Instead it settles for a neat in-between mix of a contemporary urban city setting with a dystopian futuristic design pervading it.There are a number of Megastructures standing out amongst typical modern day architecture and highways. A lot of influences for the setting and style look to be drawn from films like District 9, Mad Max and Robocop, where grounded realism and science fiction somehow find a nice way to merge together in both functional and absurd ways without getting too far fetched.

Dredd was shot natively in 3-D, and I highly, highly recommend checking it out in 3-D! It is easily one of the best 3-D films to release to date, handily outdoing every other superhero film from Marvel where most were lazily converted to 3-D. There are lots of wonderful 3-D shots, nice use of 3-D scale, depth and distance and very cool use of 3-D slow motion to highlight effects of drug use as well as Anderson's psychic abilities! 3-D is certainly the way to go to best enjoy this movie!

The new Judge Dredd manages to surpass expectations, and fans will be greatly pleased by the end result and dying for a sequel! Of course that all depends on the box office, and this is a film that earns any action cinema fan's ticket purchase! If you miss that 80's style of violent action heroes and the Expendables didn't quite do it for you, then Judge Dredd is your man! He's Bruce Willis, Schwarzenegger and Stallone all rolled up in one good package with cool guns at the hip, explosions aplenty, a beautiful sidekick, and despicable villains just begging to be brought to justice! What more could you want? The verdict is good! Check it out in theatres before it's gone! And don't forget to drop by our store if you're looking for Judge Dredd Graphic novels!

New Silent Hill: Revelation updates!

As we get closer to October, the release date for the next Silent Hill movie draws closer as does Halloween! Here's some cool new stuff that has been releasing!

A new poster was revealed. It is a lentricular 3-D one that you will probably be able to find in various theaters.

A different poster of a monster character, likely played by Malcolm McDowell, was revealed at the 2012 San Diego Comicon.

A bunch of new promotional images from the movie were also made available, you can find them here.

And anyone looking forward to some samplings of music from the soundtrack ought to head over to Jeff Dana's website where you can hear two pieces of music and even see a trailer medley! The music of the film will largely be new tracks composed by Jeff Dana who composed some new tracks and largely remixed the game's soundtracks for the first film. Akira Yamaoka, who composed and directed the sound for the video games is collaborating with Jeff Dana on the new film and will be providing a few new tracks and samples for Jeff Dana. Old favorite songs from the games will also be sampled and used in the new film! The soundtrack will likely see release in stores and may also include the compositions from the first film.

The filmmakers tried to also get the game's monster and character designer Masahiro Ito on board, but he unfortunately declined as he had committed himself to other projects. In some other game related news, word is quickly spreading that Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid is working together with Konami and his team at Kojima Productions to possibly create a new Silent Hill game in Japan utilizing the FOX Engine that was recently debuted in production alongside the new Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes!

Finally, a new TV spot was also released, so check it out below!

Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Event

Konami was also celebrating 25 years of the Metal Gear franchise in Tokyo, and again extending announcements made there into PAX. Here's the good stuff that came from the event.

There was of course tons of merchandising announcements, a spiffy watch, hoodies, even thermal underwear! Then there were new toys, music collections, a wonderful art book collection in a nice package that sadly was in limited quantity, along with key chains, phone cases with Swarowski crystals.

Posters and images from the franchise covered the subways, there was a fun game people could play around Roppongi where dudes in camouflage outfits were hiding and you could take photos of them and send them to Konami to win prizes.

But enough about that, there is new artwork by Yoji Shinkawa teased along with some major new announcements! The first of 3 big ones was that there has been a major development with regards to the live action Hollywood movie adaptation of Metal Gear Solid! It's still being handled by Sony's Columbia Pictures, but a new producer is in charge, and that's Avi Arad! He's been in charge of a lot of Marvel's properties from Spider-Man to Iron Man to the Avengers. Past efforts to make a movie from Metal Gear seemed to have stalled when Konami got into a disagreement with the previous producer over the budget. Hopefully things will work out better now, though Avi Arad does have licences to make films out of games like Uncharted and Mass Effect for awhile and nothing substantial seems to have happened on those fronts...

New games were also announced! One a smaller affair known as 'Social Ops' developed by mobile developer GREE for cell phones. The other was a major announcement to highlight what Hideo Kojima and Konami have been working on - the 'FOX Engine' an internal company wide engine for creating multi-platform games for the current generation as well as in anticipation of the next generation. The game debuted for it was a new Metal Gear Solid title called 'Ground Zeroes'!

The game 'Ground Zeroes' is set to take place after the game 'Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker' and prior to the very first original MSX title 'Metal Gear.' It star Big Boss as the protagonist with returning characters from 'Peace Walker.' The game seems to bring the Peace Walker experience to the consoles by expanding it into an open-world-like level design that includes large areas and sandbox elements. Snake (Big Boss) can even drive vehicles and call in helicopter for support. The game's debut, which was also a debut for the FOX Engine has heavily impressed many for it's visuals which were rendered in real-time on a PC with specs set to mimic current generation consoles, the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Kojima promises that the visuals will look just like it on the consoles! You can check it out for yourself in the demonstration video below which includes a lengthy real-time cutscene along with a few minutes of demo game play at the end!

The game is multi-platform and announced for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. No word on whether there are plans for a PC or WiiU version or even a version of the Vita handheld. But Metal Gear fans have lots to look forward to, and apparently the game isn't too far away! Fans of Metal Gear can drop by our store to get their hands on Metal Gear toys and merchandise, including Yoji Shinkawa's art book 'The Art of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.'

Marvel NOW! (Like DC's New 52... only Marvel!)

Looks like there's going to a big grand significance to the whole 'Avengers Vs. X-Men' storyline after all! Similar to how 'Flashpoint' was a point for resetting the entire DC Universe with the 'New 52', Marvel will likewise be putting forth new Issue #1s of various series following the culmination of events from the war between the X-Men and Avengers. But, unlike DC's New 52, the exception is that they won't be resetting the Marvel Universe, but rather carrying it on in a way that will make it easier for new readers who are unfamiliar with Marvel's characters to jump in. Marvel will also be taking a more relaxed approach to their releases which will all emerge over the course of time while current series continue to run until their respective arcs complete. In the end there will be a new beginning point for all the various Marvel franchises. Not only will new titles be launched, and there will also be relaunches of much older ones! Writers and artists will be shaken up and moved around to new positions as each ends their run on their current projects!

For more details, check out the links below to various stories and to learn who'll be working on what next! Anyone looking to grab the new #1s as they release ought to know that your best bet of getting your hands on them is to try pre-ordering them from our store! Drop in and find out how!

What if Justice League was done by Pixar?

Ever since Marvel was bought by the House of Mouse, one of the big questions was whether Disney or by association Pixar, would ever adapt any Marvel properties to animation? Particularly given the success of Pixar's 'Incredibles' it's hard not to see why! However, word from people like John Lasseter has been kind of "no", at least, for now, as Pixar in particular wants to simply focus on creating and pushing its own original works without adapting another licensed property from somewhere else. So the possibility of Pixar making new animated films from Marvel's roster of characters looks rather negative for now... But that hasn't stopped one artist, Daniel Araya, from imagining what a Pixar adaptation of DC's superheroes might be instead!

Head over here to see more!

Our first peek at the new ASTERIX CG animated film!

The still you see of Obelix above is our very first look at the new CG feature film being produced in France by VFX house Mikros Image who opened a new studio dedicated to creating animated films. It is titled 'Asterix Et Le Domaine Des Dieux' (Asterix & the Mansions of the Gods), and is being directed by Louis Clichy who worked as an animator with Pixar on Wall-E and Up!

Drop by our store if you're looking for the original comic the film is based on along with plenty of other Asterix in both French and English! The story of 'The Mansions of the Gods' involves another plot by the Romans to rid them of the Gaulish village through means of residential development  as a clever strategy. Perhaps the film will take more liberties and borrow story lines from other Asterix titles and making up new things to make the film more fleshed out and entertaining, similar to what we saw done in the new Tintin flick by Spielberg and Peter Jackson which worked out very well in my opinion!
