ART FOR HOPE - Call for Art Submissions!

Viz Media and Autodesk are calling for art submissions from various artists that will be put together and sold as a digital artbook where all the proceeds go towards helping the victims of the recent earthquake in Japan.

Art must be created using any Autodesk Sketchbook product. These can be purchased from Autodesk, but a trial version of the full product as well as a limited free version are also available for download.

You retain the full rights to your artwork, however you are not allowed to use any trademarked characters unless you are the owner yourself.

Submissions must be sent in by September, 15, 2011 along with 5 pieces of information which include a biography about yourself and how your submitted piece contains the theme of 'HOPE'. You can learn more at the link below, and from this press release.

What is the link between the Scarlet-Spider & Spider Island?

Word is going about that Ben Reilly, Peter Parker's clone who once was the Scarlet Spider and who then took on the role of Spider-Man and died at the hands of Norman Orbourne might be primed for a comeback. Toronto Film Festival to screen new Ghibli and I.G. films

The Toronto Film Festival on occasion shows some big anime films, and this year is one of those occasions! It has been announced that they will screen Studio Ghibli's 'Kokuriko-Zaka Kara' directed by Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea) as well as Production I.G.'s 'A Letter to Momo' directed by Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin-Roh: The Wolfsbrigade).

A Letter to Momo

7 years in the making this is Hiroyuki Okiura's first film since Jin-Roh: The Wolfsbrigade back in 2000. The animation is by Production I.G. Here's the first teaser trailer to the movie that seems to suggest an aura similar to that of Ghibli's Spirited Away where a young girl moving into a new country-side environment gets caught up in a supernatural world.

The Big Bear Aircraft Company

There's an intriguing little booklet written by Chris Sanders that you can read online here that is a critical look on the state of writing and the animation industry around 1989. It's a very interesting look at the industry from Sander's point of view of that period. It's done in the style of an allegorical story which includes art by Chris Sanders! You can find additional commentary via Cartoon Brew here and here which includes comments by Chris Sanders.
