'My Heart is a Spoon' & Anime Mini-Fest

My heart is a spoon is a new dance-media work exploring the emotional and physical range of rage while riffing on the visually arresting world of Japanese manga.

My heart is a spoon explores how a girl and a man find outlets to express their deep energies: in anger or humour, destructively, constructively, or passively. It is inspired by the bold aesthetic and energy of the black and white world of Manga cartooning and by Manga’s direct historical development and connection to traditional printmaking. (Originally Japanese, Manga is modern storytelling based in traditional legends and mythologies. It is now ubiquitous and popular with millions internationally.)

The young #1 has so much energy she doesn't know what to do with it and Manga is the explosive world that can contain her. The older #2 experienced rage in his life, but at a time when sublimation and positive construction were the only allowed outlets for the pent-up feelings. Each is a mirror of the other and just as rage must find its release, so #1 discovers the world is made of beautiful halftones and layers and #2 finds his long-awaited release.

The stage world includes live dance performance, and virtual media and light. We are aiming to bridge our digital fantasy world with the actual world of physical performance. And just as these digital worlds are dreamed up by live people, so the piece begins with #1 engulfed by media and resolves with the live performance being the primary source of inter-human interaction.

This is the First Incarnation of “My heart is a spoon”. Your essential participation as audience will help determine the shape and details of its next life.

The Toronto Cartoonist Workshop has some new courses beginning this month:

Writing for Comics Level I
Instructor: Ty Templeton
This action packed course will teach students story construction, character development, dialogue, plotting, as well as pitching and editing a script for the comics industry. Students will explore the different formats and techniques of comic script writing (including Marvel style and full script) while creating their own characters and stories. While basic writing skills are helpful, they are not necessary.

Duration:
Time: Monday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Cost: $395 + HST

Dynamic Page Composition
Instructor: Leonard Kirk
Aspiring DC and Marvel artists know they have to learn to tell a story in a visually compelling manner. In this course, veteran artist Leonard Kirk will share his secrets of success in building an engaging page from idea sketch to finished pencils. Leonard will touch upon important concepts such as managing eye flow, proper juxtaposition of panel elements for maximum effect, point of view, spotting blacks and dynamic posing. Take this class and watch your pages leap to the next level.

Inking for Comics
Instructor: Ty Templeton
Tracers need not apply. Comic book inking is a serious craft that employs a broad variety of approaches both philosophically and practically. The class will explore different tools, different styles and different methods of finishing a page of comic art from pencils. Students are encouraged to bring their own inking tools and while some familiarity with drawing is suggested, any level of skill is welcome.

Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist

A compliment to Ty’s Drawing the Human Figure from Memory, this course provides the next step to successful, more realistic depiction of the dynamic comic book character focusing on anatomy, light and shadow, drapery, and movement. Bandai Entertainment Cancellations

Some sad news has come out today. Bandai Entertainment is downsizing and will be halting any plans for picking up new licensing deals on new anime where DVD and Blu-ray releases are concerned. However, anything already in their catalog will continue to be made and distributed until their respective licenses expire according to demand.

Manga on the other hand won't fare as well... with several series being cancelled midway or stopped before release. This affects series related to Code Geass, Gurren Lagaan, Kannagi, Lucky Star, Mobile Suit Gundam and Tales of the Abyss.

In all cases of cancellations, the rights revert back to their original holders thus ensuring that they are open for other publishers and distributors to pick up.

Toronto improviser and comedian Amy Zuch is hosting a show and signing event to launch the official release of www.tyreandkerb.com- a daily news based comic. Recapping the biggest news events from 2011, the show will feature live improvised comic drawing in combination with improv performances by top Toronto comedians.

On December 29^th 2011, in the Comedy Bar cabaret space, Amy will be joined by veterans Jan Caruana, Lisa Merchant, Alex Hatz, Carmine Lucarelli, James Gangl and Kerry Griffin. Ron Sparks will also be there to deliver the week’s news. Projected, live iPad drawings complete the amazing lineup, and will be affected by the comedy onstage.

The webcomic Tyre & Kerb previewed for 3 months, beginning in August 2011. The start of the new year will bring the official launch and daily comic posts will return once again! Each comic is based on a news event from the past 24 hours and includes a link to the original news article.

In addition to the show, the event will feature giveaways… including a Kobo EReader!

Printed comics, merchandise and displays will also be present, and Amy Zuch will be available for signings and Q&A.

Writing for Comics Level I
Instructor: Ty Templeton
This action packed course will teach students story construction, character development, dialogue, plotting, as well as pitching and editing a script for the comics industry. Students will explore the different formats and techniques of comic script writing (including Marvel style and full script) while creating their own characters and stories. While basic writing skills are helpful, they are not necessary.
Duration: January 16 – February 27
Time: Monday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Dynamic Page Composition
Instructor: Leonard Kirk
Aspiring DC and Marvel artists know they have to learn to tell a story in a visually compelling manner. In this course, veteran artist Leonard Kirk will share his secrets of success in building an engaging page from idea sketch to finished pencils. Leonard will touch upon important concepts such as managing eye flow, proper juxtaposition of panel elements for maximum effect, point of view, spotting blacks and dynamic posing. Take this class and watch your pages leap to the next level.

Making a Splash: Successful Watermedia Techniques
Instructor: Mark Thurman
Making a Splash introduces students to gouache and watercolour where a variety of different watercolours and surfaces will be explored. Colour theory will be covered and students will be encouraged to develop their own visual themes including landscape, still life, cartoon, caricature, illustration and figurative subject matter. This course will be of interest to the fine artist, illustrator or animator looking to develop core painting skills in a flexible and versatile media.

Inking for Comics
Instructor: Ty Templeton
Tracers need not apply. Comic book inking is a serious craft that employs a broad variety of approaches both philosophically and practically. The class will explore different tools, different styles and different methods of finishing a page of comic art from pencils. Students are encouraged to bring their own inking tools and while some familiarity with drawing is suggested, any level of skill is welcome.
Duration: January 17 – February 28
Time: Tuesday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist
Instructor: Ty Templeton
A compliment to Ty’s Drawing the Human Figure from Memory, this course provides the next step to successful, more realistic depiction of the dynamic comic book character focusing on anatomy, light and shadow, drapery, and movement. It will focus on work done from live models with anatomy instruction before each drawing session. Any level of skill is welcome.
Duration: January 18 – February 29
Time: Wednesday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Open Life Drawing
Drawing the human figure well is core to the disciplines of comics, illustration, animation, game design and fine arts. And of course the secret to getting good at the art of life drawing is practice, practice ... practice!

The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop invites students and members of the community to attend our weekly open life session to hone their skills. Poses will range from 2 minutes to 30 minutes. Clothed and unclothed models will be utilized with a focus on imaginative posing and action to reflect the demands of drawing comics.
Duration: January 19 – March 1
Time: Thursday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Cost: $15 per session (HST included)

Designing Environments and Props for the Comic Book Artist
Instructor: Dave Ross
Up and coming comic book artists know that successful storytelling requires more than eye popping figures in action poses. Star Wars artist Dave Ross will instruct students in how to create lively, believable and imaginative backgrounds for your hero to inhabit. Fundamentals of perspective, principles of design and the art of using reference intelligently will be covered.

Cartooning and Illustration for Kids
Instructor: Dave Lapp
Are you interested in comics, cartoons, graphic novels or do you just like to draw? Students of any ability will learn to develop their narrative and graphic abilities through the use of pencils, markers, dip pens, brush and ink, acrylic paint, scratchboard and more! Projects can include: trading cards, class comic anthologies, animation flipbooks and dozens of other activities developed through the surprisingly complex language of cartooning.
Duration: January 23 – March 12
Time: Monday afternoons 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Cartooning Rodeo
Instructor: Walter Dickinson
Saddle up, pardners, for a course where the key word is fun! Young artists are encouraged to expand their creativity working with simple drawing materials such as pencil, pen and ink, and pencil crayons. Sample projects may include designing an alien world, drawing an interpretive self-portrait as a zombie, princess or wizard and drawing your pet as a mythical creature of your choice. Students will also be shown how to write, draw and publish their own 8 page mini-comic. A great introductory course for the aspiring cartoonist or graphic novelist!
Duration: January 21 – March 10
Time: Saturday mornings 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Create Your Own Superhero!
Instructor: Walter Dickinson
Do you enjoy superhero movies? Do you wish you could create your own super powered character and see him/her up on the big screen? The truth is most movie superheroes started out as comic books. Students of this class will learn about basic proportion and how to construct the human figure followed by creating and designing that all-important signature costume. Finally, students will take their creation and craft an 8 page story that will be published in mini-comic format for their friends and family! Shoot for the stars and create the next Superman today!

Seoul Sessions with Lesean Thomas

Lesean Thomas has been living in one of the Meccas of Animation productions for the past 2 years: South Korea! It's where America and Japan outsource most of their animated tv shows. Lesean Thomas has been producing upcoming shows like 'The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra' (storyboard/animation production) and the upcoming, highly anticipated 'Black Dynamite: The Animated series' as Producer. However, he's also been very busy on his own projects, one of which is based off of his upcoming graphic novel, 'Cannonbusters.' There's a 6-part behind-the-scenes documentary on the production of it and his time there in the works premiering online in January. You can check out a teaser below! It'd informative for animation students to see how things are done over there, and more importantly by someone who is currently working on and producing relevant hit, animated tv shows in the States!

Does Copyright Infringment help boost success?

Here's an interesting discussion to ponder. Does allowing other industries such as the manga doujinshi one to copy, parody and distribute the work of a copyrighted IP have a beneficial effect on the popularity of the IP or genre as a whole? What limits should copyright law exercise? Are the artists or IP holding publishers themselves free to decide whether to halt or allow this to continue, or should the law be standard and allow the government to step in regardless and prosecute anyone who infringes upon it?

Here are two interesting stories to read:

Ken Akamatsu, the creator of 'Love Hina' and 'Magister Magi Negima', is speaking up to protest against the Japanese government for adopting copyright laws that the U.S. currently has in place with regards to protecting copyrighted works. As an artist and creator of popular IP himself, he finds that the doujin industry by creating parodies and spin offs of his work has actually been financially beneficial to him and others by helping boost its popularity. As well, Akamatsu runs a site that scans and publishes out-of-print manga and doujin with their creator's permission for free online.

Possibly the best looking of all the Halo artbooks ever published. If you like Halo, you should at least have a look for yourself. The last halo book to come out went out of print pretty fast, and even though we had ample supply to start, we couldnt meet all the demand once it went out of print. If you like the book, dont wait to the last minute. Quality books like this one, cost a lot less when they are new, compared to when they are out of print and harder to find.

The second book by Master artist and instructor Andrew Loomis will be in shop this coming week (most likely by Thursday). Drawing the Head and Hands the original was selling for crazy money online (even in beat up, damaged condition) as it was previously out of print. Now with this handsome new edition, the price has come down so anyone that wants it should be able to afford it. Well worth owning. Copies of Loomis's first book Drawing For All Its Worth are also available in our shop.
